Kirloskarvadi, the flagship plant of Kirloskar Brothers Limited and one of India’s first Industrial Townships, completed 100 years of its contribution to society. Laxmanrao Kirloskar established Kirloskarvadi Industrial Township on March 10th 1910 with the vision of setting up his industry and communities for employees.
To celebrate this occasion, Union Cabinet Minister Sharad Pawar, along with other eminent industrialists, joined Sanjay C. Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kirloskar Brothers Limited and other members of Kirloskar family at Kirloskarvadi. Involving the locals and members who have contributed to the success of Kirloskarvadi a day long function with various activities was organised.
The day started with ‘Prabhat Pheri’ a tradition followed by the Kirloskar family for many years, followed by activities like tree plantation drive and the inauguration of a photo exhibition on Kirloskarvadi. The main function started at 10.30am where ‘Katha Krloskarvadi chi’, a book on the history of Kirloskarvadi by Mr. Savita Bhave was released. ‘Adhi Bij Ekale’, a special film on Kirloskarvadi by Sudhir Moghe, featuring Arun Nalawade was also launched on the occasion.
To commemorate this milestone, Kirloskar Brothers Limited has also decided to undertake a series of initiatives focusing on the needs of the youth in and around Kirloskarvadi. The initiatives will include felicitation programmes for budding entrepreneurs, interactions and experience sharing with eminent industrial personalities and hydraulic simulation lab for students in cooperation with technical institutes. A centenary product iCP (Innovative range of Chemical Process Pumps) for the chemical process industry will also be launched during the year. The product will introduce non-metallic components and zero losses, zero maintenance and zero leakages.
Speaking on the occasion Sanjay C. Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kirloskar Brothers Limited, said, “Hundred years back my great grand father Mr. Lamanrao Kirloskar started the journey to build an industrial township ,’Kirloskarvadi’, where we stand today. It’s a very proud moment for all of us to be a part of this historic landmark. Kirloskar Brothers Limited commemorates the nationwide Centenary celebration of South Zone in Chennai on 16th November 2010. On the occasion, Chief Guest, Mr. M. V. Subbiah, Former chairman, Murugappa Group and Chairman, National Skill Development Corporation, joined Mr. Sanjay C. Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL) and Mr. Atul Kirloskar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL) for a day long celebration.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr. Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, TVS Motor and Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Distinguished Scientist and Director (Construction) and Project Director, BHAVINI along with two of KBL’s oldest dealers in South Zone, Mr. Ashok Shah, Basic Engineers and Traders and Mr. S. Sudhakar Moopanar, R. Soundararajan and Company. Chief Guest on the occasion, Mr. M. V. Subbiah, said, “The Kirloskar ’s have always believed that wealth and knowledge must always be shared with the community. They have contributed immensely to the nation building process through their township and the activities of the Vikas Charitable Trust. This is also evident in the fact that Kirloskar Brothers was recently recognised by the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Pune for emerging as one of the top tax payers of Pune Region.”
17th January, 2011, witnessed the hundred years of KBLs heritage being celebrated in New Delhi, for the North Zone. The Chief Guest on this occasion was Arun Bharat Ram, Chairman, SRF Limited.
Recalling his long association with the Kirloskars, he said “My grand father, Lala Sri Ram, mentored Shantanu uncle and was Chairman of KOEL for many years. Both our group founders were driven by the passion for improving the well-being of common people. “A celebration of this nature requires us to make a pledge for the future – a promise to continue the leadership role; a promise to continue to develop people; a promise to continue to innovate; a promise to perform through excellence; a promise to keep in mind sustainable and equitable growth and most importantly a promise to stick to our values.” He concluded his talk with a profound thought which will serve us as fodder for us, as we take on the future. “We must keep searching for a story to tell our families and friends about the meaningful contributions we make in the business. I feel it is possible to make such contributions if we remember who we are and why we exist.”
21st February, 2011 was slated for celebrating our centenary in the West Zone, in Mumbai. The Chief Guest for the event was Alok Kumar Misra, Chairman and Managing Director, Bank of India. “A century in cricket, or a century of existence for either a person or for a Corporate entity is indeed a great achievement. Still more, when it is a family run business, which now has the fifth generation member serving the corporate” he said, adding that when the relationship with business associates lasts for six to seven decades, it was truly an outstanding achievement. The establishment of Kirloskarvadi factory, he said, was not the birth of an industrial house. It must be seen as the emergence of Indian entrepreneurial spirit; of ‘Swadeshi Movement’. Concluding his talk he wished KBL continued success, complimenting the company saying, “You are well poised to achieve the next milestone of 200 years !”
The East zone centenary celebrations of Kirloskarvadi at Kolkata on 15th June, 2010, featured a pack schedule. KBL celebrated centenary function with partners in success comprising of customers, channel partners, government officials and KBL employees. The event got an overwhelming response, with more than 500 registrations. The celebrations were inaugurated by the Guest of Honour, Dr. R P Goenka, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of RPG group.
10th March, 2011, was the day the year long centenary celebrations drew to a close. Dr. Patangrao Kadam, Minister for Forests, Rehabilitation and Relief Works and Earthquake Rehabilitation, Government of Maharashtra graced the grand finale as Chief Guest. Addressing the audience in chaste Marathi, he first paid homage to the stalwart visionary, Laxmanrao Kirloskar, Founder, Kirloskar Group. He lauded the contribution of the Kirloskar’s in ushering in the era of industrialization in India; that too in a rural area – Kirloskarvadi. “KBL” said Patangrao Kadam “Is an ideal example of a professionally run, family business with strong commitment to its social responsibility." The day long function also included the felicitation of fourth generation of KBL employees.
