The seed of Social responsibility sown by Shantanurao Kirloskar has spread across all Kirloskar Group of companies. Today, this 'responsibility' embraces many more facets of social causes. A visionary industry stalwart, Shantanurao was equally concerned with the responsibility a corporate entity has in moulding society in which it operates. It was his firm belief that any social transformation would be successful and sustainable if it began with children. One such initiative was 'Clean and Beautiful School Contest'. He said ...and we quote :
"Cleanliness and beauty are two sides of the same coin. It is a misconception that cleanliness and beauty requires more money. Cleanliness and beauty require only vision, and if a citizen has this vision , he will create a clean and beautiful environment around him".
"However, the passion for cleanliness has to be nurtured from childhood. Children are most receptive to good values and are prone to inculcate what they see around them. Aren't our school childern the future citizens of India ?"
"It is our responsibility to nurture and develop millions of future citizens who are committed to cleanliness and beauty. To achieve this, we should sow the seeds of these values in childern at school level. Patriotism has many outlets and I consider the mission of promoting cleanliness through 'Clean and Beautiful School Scheme' no less an act of patriotism."
The town of Kirloskarvadi was founded by Laxmanrao Kirloskar in 1910 when he started his factory, called Kirloskar Brothers Ltd, near the railway station that was at that time called Kundal Road. Laxmanrao Kirloskar had read about "industrial townships" in Europe and USA where the owners of industries had built communities for the employees. His dream was to build his own industry and a community for the employees. The culmination of his dream is the town of Kirloskarvadi. Balasaheb Pant Pratinidhi, the ruler of the Aundh Sansthan, one of the many Indian Princely States under the British rule in India before independence, donated the land to Laxmanrao Kirloskar to establish the factory and the town. The factory around which the town was built is still the flagship manufacturing plant of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. It is the second oldest industrial township in India.
Kirloskarvadi is located at 17.085°N 74.414°E. It is surrounded by fertile agricultural land. Kundal, Palus, Dudhondi, Sawantpur and Ramanandnagar are the nearest villages. During Indian independence struggle, some of the militant revolutionary fighters who went underground to escape arrest took refuge in Kirloskarvadi. The workers from the factory took part in protests and satyagraha against the British rule. Two workers from the factory - Umashankar Pandya and Sadashiv Pendharkar - were killed when police opened fire on one such protest. An obelisk (Marathi: स्तंभ) and park in the town commemorates the sacrifices of these workers.
On March 10, 2010, Kirloskarvadi celebrated 100 years of its establishment.
